As a process, dot and dab is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to plaster a wall, whilst also being effective in uneven areas.
The process is time-conscious and cleaner than other methods as it doesn’t require wet mixes, so time is saved as there is a much shorter drying period. This means that the world can be evaluated and passed for decoration in a quicker turnaround time.
What You Need To Begin
In order to dot and dab plasterboard to your walls, you will require your raw materials: plasterboard and adhesive.
Ensure you have an adequate amount of plasterboard for the entirety of your project: this will ensure consistency. Try to choose boards that are at least 10mm thick as this will mean the finished walls are of higher quality and more robust.
Specific tools will be required for the measuring and resizing of plasterboard, as well as for mixing and applying the adhesive to the walls. You will also require tools for the installation and fixing of the plasterboard, such as a level measure, measuring tape, trowel, feather edge, clean cutting tools and a pencil.
Ensure your own personal safety and well-being when working on the project by wearing various protective equipment such as safety goggles, dust-resistant respiratory protection, appropriate handwear, safety boots and protective headwear.
Clean tools such as buckets, mixing equipment and trowels are advisable so as not to contaminate the adhesive.
Plasterboard Dab Thickness
Typically, adhesive dabs have an initial thickness of approximately 10mm when compressed between the board and the substrate. When you factor in the added 12.5mm thickness of the plasterboard sheets placed on top, the combined depth amounts to approximately 22.5mm.
How to Dot and Dab Your Walls
Firstly, you must remember that the dot and dab method is only appropriate for attaching plasterboard to brick, blockwalls or concrete surfaces.
Also, you must absolutely ensure that all bare walls are completely dry and free of moisture before starting the process: failure to do this can result in damp which can easily be avoided through due diligence.
Mark and measure your walls so that you know precisely how many plasterboards you require and how to cut them. Conducting this process before mixing and applying your adhesive will save you time, money and materials.
When mixing the adhesive, ensure to follow the on-packet instructions exactly: without doing this, the adhesive to be inconsistent or not work at all. Failure to have a consistently thick, correct consistency will either create more unforeseen expenses in order to rectify or culminate in a poor finish.
Ensure you use a mixing stick to get a consistent and thick adhesive, only making enough for one board at a time.
Now that you have completed the preparation, you are ready to begin the dot and dabbing process.
For consistency, each dot and dab should be roughly 6 to 8 inches apart and a thickness of absolutely no more than 25mm (ideally 10mm): any thicker and you may run into drying issues or wonky walls once the plasterboard is affixed.
For reference, your dabs should have a width of between 50mm to 75mm and a length of approximately 250mm.
Always ensure that the adhesive you select for the job explicitly states that it is suitable for plasterboarding.
Drying Process: How Long Does It Take for Dot and Dab to Dry?
To set and dry, dot and dab adhesives take anywhere in the region of 3 to 6 hours, depending on atmospheric conditions such as weather, temperature and humidity. This is significantly faster than the wet plaster drying time.
From a productivity point of view, ensure that you complete other necessary tasks whilst you wait for the plasterboard to set to the wall.
Drawbacks of Dot and Dab
Though the dot and dab method is popular amongst builders in comparison to wet plaster, it does have its own downsides, particularly for the end-user.
Firstly, the space behind the plasterboard – the ‘undabbed’ parts of the wall – known as a cavity, is a waste of space in practical terms. For the end user, an example being a homeowner, affixing mod-cons such as shelving, cupboards or coathangers becomes much more difficult.
The second drawback of drylining is the aspect of soundproofing. By design, drylining creates various cavities between the plasterboard and bare wall, with no inherent sound absorption. As a result, sound becomes trapped within the cavity, resonates and is amplified. This can create an issue for the dweller of the building, as well as neighbouring properties if the plasterboard chosen is too acoustically reflective or the cavity is too deep.
To Screw or Not to Screw? Can You Screw Into Dot and Dab Walls?
Fixing a screw into a dot and dab wall isn’t an entirely straightforward process, at least if you or the dweller wishes to affix a screw into a non-dabbed section of the wall.
Though theoretically plasterboard with a cavity behind it can bear the load of lighter fixings, it is still not advisable to do so without the appropriate preparation.
For heavier loads, you must ensure that you use the correct cavity wall fixings and anchors that will circumvent the cavity found behind the plasterboard, instead, securing the screw to a metal-lined fixing.
Dot and Dabbing Around a Window
Simple enough, however, ensure you cut your plasterboard with careful consideration to the window exterior, such as the reveal and head of the window.
In order to confirm the plasterboard is flush and tight to the window frame exterior, you can overlap the board slightly over into the window reveal, then trim outwardly as required.
